KenRockwell.com has been the world's leading independent source of photographic information since I founded it in 1999, five years before RUclips or Facebook were created. Today I have two million different people every month seeing my articles and work.
No stranger to actually shooting rather than just talking about it, I've been photographing for over 50 years since I was a very little kid. I've won innumerable major awards, I've exhibited in galleries and museums and my work is held in public & private collections worldwide. My two most recent clients are Merck Pharmaceuticals and McDonalds. I hold four United States patents related to cameras and digital imaging.

Thank you for all of your amazing reviews! If you were going into aviation photography after years of other photograpy; what body/lens combo would you pick? This lens with the Zf, or the R6mkII with the Rf 200-800, or the R5 with the RF 100-500?
By aviation do you mean air to air or air to ground or ground to air? It’s tough to say since I don’t know so what you’re doing, but the 100-500 has the broadest range. If you need longer, use an APS-C camera like the R7 or R10. The 200-800 is slower and might be less applicable to aviation as you probably need fast shutter speeds to stop camera motion. Aviation is a huge field. I’d not buy Nikon for Mirrorless, Nikon went obsolete with DSLRs even though they’re still popular with people who shot Nikon years ago. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV Primarily ground to air - maybe some air to air eventually. Was thinking of the R7 also - would you pick it with the 100-500? Saw how much you like the R6 mk ii... So wondered r6 mkii with 200-800 or R7 with RF 100-500. Love props to jets, so the fast shutter speed is important. Thank you!
"Red? Red wood!" I did not know Corvettes are made from wood ! Wow, more hidden romanian phrases, Ken is crazy !
Very special wood from closely guarded forests north of Bowling Green, KENtucky. Thanks! I didn’t think anyone read the subtitles, good eye!
@@KenRockwellTV Geezus , i finished the video just to read them all ! Someone should make a note in the comments for the english curious speakers
Your samples were all taken in Program mode?
Mostly. Also auto white balance and auto ISO. All JPG normal and usually at just medium (25MP) resolution. Thanks!
A lot of people have reported that the distance measurement scale in the LCD screen is way off the mark and basically inaccurate and unusable.
Mine works fine - but the in-finder display in my Z8 is way off. The one on the lens is fine.
Metal strong, plastic light. At 67yo with worsening arthritis, plastic might mean I'm able to continue shooting, or sitting in front of the TV! Also, as a semi-pro motorsports shooter, I find that the vast majority of my clients (competitors, their family and team plus online media), absolutely DO NOT need more megapixels. Apart from the hassle of transferring big files over the interweb, most people will only view the images on a computer or smartphone. Almost nobody these days wants to make big prints. They just want to send grandma a pic or share it on FB or Instagram. A few megapix is sufficient and 24 is plenty plus.
For light weight and speed also don’t discount the R6 Mk II, R7 and R10, which are remarkable if you want light weight. Thanks!
Chinese product: buy it today breaks tomorrow
Still working!
LOL - trashing the dials at the top because they're not modern when the intent of this camera is to provide a retro feel and look. Sure, it's a niche market and not meant for those who want a modern camera feel. I have a Z8, Z6ii, Z7 and a Zf. I absolutely needed the Smallrig grip, but now I'm off to the races with the Zf and I absolutely love it. It's not a Z8....we know that. But I have absolutely no buyers remorse with the Zf even with the Z6iii now out. Image quality is fantastic, I like having a flippy screen option and the eye autofocus actually works great despite what this video says. Auto - ISO? I just reprogram the video record button to ISO and use the command dials which is very little difference than my other Z cameras. The problem with this review is that it doesn't start with Nikon's intention for this camera. Calling it a poser camera is ridiculous and misses the point of the launch entirely......can't believe Ken would make this comment (poser 40mm f2 lens, sure). In my opinion, Nikon nailed it with this camera.....there's very little difference in my workflow and button assignment with the Zf vs the other Z cameras which makes it easy to switch between. The missing joystick is THE biggest issue I have with this camera. Take this review with a grain of salt. This is a great camera. If you have the funds for a Z8, buy that of course. Want the best ergonomics at a lower price, buy a Z6ii or Z7ii. Want a fun camera that performs better than a Z6ii but not at a Z8 level, the Zf is a fantastic choice. It keeps the same great Z6ii dynamic range (better than Z6iii) with better cAF than the Z6ii at a better price than the Z6iii. It's a pretty sweet option. And that's not to mention the quick B&W switch that I love.
Thanks! I say it like it is.
Nice concise review Always look forward to Ken’s legendary reviews!
Thank you!
4:33 wait, you want your photos to look like that? oh lord...
Awesome shots! You bet I do. Thanks!
What a great video - really enjoyed the content, sample pics etc.
Thanks! That’s what I’m going for.
I got this lens with an R6 Mark II and it haunted me that I didn't go ahead and get the 24-105 F4 L lens. I rented the L lens to see what the difference was and I couldn't really tell the picture quality from both lenses apart when I analyzed them. Still, the build quality and weather sealing are swaying me to change versions of this lens because I like doing landscape photography when hiking.
Exactly. Pictures are identical, L just more expensive and built tougher and faster at the long end. Glad we have so many choices from Canon.
Just saw this EXCELLENT video. You helped me identify my old 50 mm lens that was on my FE camera as an AI lens, which I put on my new Zf body yesterday and works amazingly well! Thanks so much!
That’s why I share all this. Thank you!!!
There is also URTH adapter for mount Minolta Rokkor Lenses to Z Cameras !
Yip, there all out there for people who want them. Personally I only use the camera brand lenses. Tha ks!
Is it weather sealed?
It claims so www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/z/180-600mm.htm#good
I was surprised to seel everyone commenting on the speed of his presentation rather than the content. I'm fed up of youtubers spoonfeeding me one laborious minute at a time... This was succinct and bullshit free. Your delivery is almost as fast as the 200 F/2's focus... Almost, but not quite. Great stuff, Ken!
Thank you! I go for all content, no bs.
What do you think about the new Nikon Z6 MK3?
See my review of it at www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/z/z6-iii.htm I much prefer the R6 Mk II. Thanks! See also www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r6-ii.htm
lmao why is there Romanian in the image info?
Just Easter eggs for my sharp-eyed Romanian readers because there was blank space. I didn't think anyone ever read the subtitles, good eyes!
Given the high flexibility of the programmable function buttons on the lens, can one be programmed to do an f-stop preview? Or, does this lens (or maybe all Z-mount lenses) not support this? (I'm still learning all of the Z-system options, so haven't tried this one, yet.)
I forget offhand, you’ll have to look in the menu of your particular camera. It can vary by model of camera; it’s not a function of the lens. Thanks!
Zeeeeeeee
Aaaaaaaaaaa
What flash kit would you recommend for this r100? I am shooting my first wedding with my amazing 85mm f2.0 lens. 🎉 Thank you for video
Just use the built-in. If not fast enough, then the EL-100 is PERFECT www.kenrockwell.com/canon/flash/el-100.htm Thanks!
Any experience/opinions using one of the teleconverters with this lens?
Not tried. Ought to work pretty well, far better than TCs ever did on DSLRs. Thanks!
Seems so small in your hands!
Z8 is pretty chunky; I have big hands. Thanks!
I’m not sure this is the same Ken Rockwell. You used to have nothing good to say about Nikon. Well done.
I think Ken still has a soft spot in his heart for Nikon Jpegs ;)
I speak the truth. Nikon used to be awesome from 1959-1990s, then started sucking wind when Canon’s EOS-1 was awesome and Nikon got caught behind in AF. The Z system is now third behind Canon and Sony, and of course they still make some good stuff. I sent 180-600mm back, it was offshore to China - No es bueno para mi. Still waiting for my RF 200-800mm. Thanks!
Always found KR useful and honest opinion blunt at times but good for me
No BS, all about getting to the point. THANKS!
Great images w this and z8,lens foot not so good, thank you Ken!
Thank YOU!
This lens is absolutely outstanding, it is a must have! Why spend thousands on a 400mm 2.8?
400 2.8 were so from film days. Thanks!
Got mine this month Phenomenal for wildlife, and I even got a chance to do concert photos with it, when I shot Metallica from Front of House (about 75 meters from the stage). Hope to bring it to a motorsport event in the near future.
METALLICA!!!!!!!!! THANKS!🤘🏻
Ken with the Romanian Easter eggs 🙌
Just messing with my sharp-eyed Romanian friends when I have space. I didn't the anyone actually read the subtitles; reminds me of the opening of Monty Python's Holy Grail with comments in Swedish.
I need to catch up on your videos. The algorithms are flawed.
Thanks, they're all at KenRockwell.TV
Amazing pics/clips showcasing the capabilities of this lens! Thanks for putting this video together!
Thank YOU!
Eagerly waiting for this lens to be back in stock, I can't wait to be able to shoot past 200mm with a great lens for Z mount that won't break the bank. Once again, thanks for putting out thorough, no-nonsense reviews that make these kind of decisions easier!
Never wait for stock; order online and be patient, which is how I got mine months ago. See www.kenrockwell.com/tech/how-to-get-it.htm Thanks!
Nice review of a great lens. Have found a significant improvement in keeper rate over the old F mount 200-500mm.
Thanks!
Thanks for the informative video. After I sell some of my old f-mount lenses I will buy that one. Did I miss it or did you forget to mention that this lens is internally zooming? I see that as a real advantage compared to the old 200-500 f/5.6-
THat's all mentioned in my written review at www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/z/180-600mm.htm Thanks!
Like the metal construction of these lenses. In these modern days of everything plastic, it’s nice to pick up a solid metal lens.
Me too. Solid build, solid optics, fn buttons and lightweight price sold me.
I got this lens last year when it was released and love how sharp and how much better focusing it is over the older 200-500 F mount.
Thanks!
In that sun shot with the helicopter at what point do we need to worry about damaging the sensor when using a telephoto lens?
I never worry, this was late afternoon.
I have a Z8 myself, I’m wondering if I should go for this 180-600mm or the 70-200mm. I shoot vehicles (cars, trains, and aircraft) and my only other focal length at the moment is 40mm.
Rent or try. I have both and use them for different subjects. Do you think that you will need to go below 180mm? Remember this lens is significantly cheaper, but not the ultimate quality of the 70-200.
@@ian-nz-2000 Thanks for the suggestion i’ll make sure to do my own testing to see what I like.
Get the 100-400mm and you're better than either of those! www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/z/100-400mm.htm
@@KenRockwellTV Thanks for the suggestion!
Do you think the Z50 paired with this lens would make for a good wildlife (birds, especially) setup?
Birds no.. I own a Z50 and a zf. The Z50 don't really detect small birds you need to focus on your own with the small box. It can work for Birds standing still but in flight it's super hard cause the tracking is bad
No, because the Z50 is old, and also has very slow AF even when it was new. Far better to get a Canon R7, R10 or R50 and the Canon 200-800mm. www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/index.htm Thanks!
Not giving up on my 200-500mm just yet
The 200-500mm is amazing. I used it with my Nikon D5500 for bird photography and I was blown away. I did recently move to the Z8, so I am getting the 180-600mm
Save your money and get the 500 PF instead.
The 180-600 is sharper, faster to focus, internal zoom and fully weathersealed. I'm getting one!
I wouldn't either. Both ate great lenses, so if you already have the 200-500, you're golden,
I've done my extensive research, and decided that this was the best first telephoto for my Z7ii. It's not perfect, but you can't argue the price. Biggest downside is I just can't buy it for retail. Just going to have to wait.
Of course, NEVER buy at retail; the boxes are not sealed. I only get my gear online where then ship from remote warehouses where other customers and store employees haven't been fiddling with your "new" lens before you get it. Order and be patient, see www.kenrockwell.com/tech/how-to-get-it.htm Thanks!
Love to see the results when mounted on a Zfc! :)
Same as results on every other Z camera. Thanks!
Hi Ken i am following your reviews for years.....i got a canon 6 mark ii but i am confused in what lens should I buy 24-70 2.8, or 24-240 mm ?! i am interested at night photography as well thanks again
I LOVE my RF 24-240mm!!!! www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/24-240mm.htm
Excellent review! They're always a blast.
This lens and the Z8 or Z6iii is the best value for sports and action in 2024.
Z6iii more so but great point!
Thanks!
The link for the complete review is for a Viltrox lens.
Oops, just fixed that. Thanks!!!
Did I miss the ad for the "I Shoot RAW" T-Shirt?

I need this! Thanks Ken!
Why these Romanian sentences at the end of each photo description??
Just some Easter eggs for my sharp-eyed Romanian friends since I had room. You passed, good eyes! I didn’t think anyone ever read the subtitles 😁.
@@KenRockwellTV Wow, those were so weird ! Cool but weird ! I just saw the second sentence and rushed to the comments to ask what is going on with the embedded romanian ..
Din multe, unul. My favorite 🤩 You could also consider “Din multe, una.” Since picture/photo is feminine in Română 😉
@@FB_Photograpy I was trying to say "E pluribus unum" in Romanian, in reference to a motto of the USA.
Straight up, no smoke blowin: Those images oozed magic, IMO. That last one of the chopper saw my jaw drop. Thanks as ever for the review.....
I was waiting for your review on this lens 😊 Very nicely reviewed ❤ I'm using this lens with Z9 for Birds and Wildlife Photography and I'm very satisfied with its performance.
